Exchange Bookshop, Dalkey, Co.Dublin

I paid a flying visit here recently and was delighted to find the bookshop busy with plenty of customers, and buying, not just browsing. The very pleasant proprietor, David Simmons, says business is good despite the economic woes of the country. Dalkey has everything for the best in quality retail therapy – galleries, bookshops, coffee shops, organic and health food shops, heritage centres – all packed into a tiny, beautifully kept enclave. All within a stones throw of Dalkey DART station. Mmmm!

Raven Books, Blackrock, Co.Dublin

Located at 12 Carysfort Avenue (just round the corner from Blackrock Main Street) this compact little shop is like the Tardis and boasts a lot more on the inside than its diminutive frontage would suggest. I popped in today, for the first time, and was very pleasantly surprised by the range and quality of stock. Despite the indifferent weather the shop was doing a brisk trade and I would recommend it as a call for all booklovers. Friendly customer service! Remember that there are also several booksellers in the Blackrock Market (off Main Street) as well as, the long established, Carrig Books at 73 Main Street.

Raven Books are open as follows:

Mon/Weds, 9.30am-6pm
Thurs 9.30am-8pm
Fri/Sat 9.30am-6pm
Sunday 11.00am-3pm

Stokes Books,

Market Arcade, Sth.Great Georges Street, Dublin.2.

Stokes Books and its proprietor, Stephen Stokes, are a Dublin institution and if it’s quality Irish books you’re after look no further. Rare editions on Irish history, transport, literature etc. line the shelves while outside shelves groan under the weight of vast numbers of bargain books all at rock bottom prices. Stephen is an avid book collector himself and if he doesn’t know the book you’re looking for – well it probably never existed!

Tel: (01) 671 3584

Open: 11am/6pm Mon-Sat.

Zozimus Books at the Gorey Indoor Market

On a flying visit to Gorey, Co.Wexford, this afternoon I chanced upon the Gorey Indoor Market on Main Street. Despite only living down the road in Enniscorthy I had never heard of it and if it hadn’t been for a display of books at the entrance I might have missed it altogether. On entering, the market stretches off into the distance but I didn’t venture very far as close to the entrance is Zozimus Books. An elongated premises stretched out along one wall of the market and stacked high with good quality secondhand books – not your usual market tat! I got into conversation with the proprietor, John Jackson, a Joycean enthusiast, but don’t let that put you off; and he told me that he had been trading there quite successfully for more than a year and his shop is gradually expanding. John has something for all tastes and pockets with prices ranging from €2 to €200. I noted a particularly interesting collection of old Big House auction catalogues and a number of hard to find natural history books in the extensive Irish section. I will return again soon – with my camera – and post some pics here. The Market is open 10am – 5pm every Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

On my way back to the railway station I called into that most famous of Gorey institutions, French’s Pub, also on Main Street and was delighted to see that it was unchanged from my last visit in 2003! A classic Irish pub, right up there with Morrissey’s of Abbeyleix and Kehoe’s of South Anne Street,  and a place to visit before you die. Not a photo of it to be had online so I will take some on my next visit and post here as well.

Healy Rare Books – Catalogue 10 – Autumn 2010

This morning an unsolicited gift landed in through my letterbox – the latest catalogue from Healy Rare Books of Galway and what a treasure trove it is. A quick browse through the 1,131 volumes listed (184 pages) revealed all sorts of goodies. Nearly every volume is Irish or, in a few cases, an Irish printing of a classic work. There’s something for everybody here – topograhical, railway, ornithological, history, Republican, literary classics, rare signed editions, books from the library of Victorian British Prime Minister – William Gladstone (!), some nice editions relating to the 1798 rebellion including a rare eyewitness work by the Anglican Bishop of Killala (Joseph Stock), some interesting Roger Casement items too, and a must have (if I wasn’t broke) would be a copy of the ultra-rare Index to the Prerogative Wills of Ireland 1536 – 1810 by Sir Arthur Vicars – a vital research tool for genealogists. Prices range from €25 to four figures but there is something for everybody’s pocket – even mine!

Anybody interested in obtaining a copy of the catalogue should contact Norman Healy on (091) 529980 or email normanhealy@eircom.net – alternatively send a cheque/PO for €10 (incls.p+p) payable to Norman Healy and send it to him at “Meadowlands”, Lioscarraig, Threadneedle Road, Galway, Co.Galway

The catalogue is a collectors’ item itself and is printed on quality paper – it’s available since Monday so get moving before all the goodies are gone!
