Happy Christmas Everyone!

Happy Christmas to all of you who subscribe to my blog as well as to those who just look in from time to time. Christmas Day is upon us at last – it looked for a while there that the country wouldn’t make it to the big day! Anyway, things can only get better in 2012 and I certainly hope to make many improvements to the blog and its usefulness to readers. I’m hoping to get on the road a lot more next year as my children have now reached the age where I can bring them with me. Amongst other things I hope to include a series of illustrated reports from Auctions, Fair, Shops & Car Boot Sales.

I’m very grateful to all of you who have kept me updated with your events and to those of you who regularly let me know of your experiences at boot sales etc. I only wish that I could include a discussion forum on the blog but, whether it’s possible or not, I simply wouldn’t have the time to administer it. I may include a moderated comments page for car booting which may be helpful to all concerned.

Anyway, it’s late now and I’m still decorating the tree, so I will close by wishing everybody A Very Happy Christmas & A Peaceful (and Prosperous) New year.

David

Good taste triumphs at Whyte’s Irish Art Sale!

Whyte’s Irish Art Sale on the 28th November saw Paul Henry’s ‘Altan Lough, Donegal’ eclipse the Jack B Yeats ‘The Street in Shadow’ for the top price realised – €75,000 and €72,000 respectively. The Paul Henry handsomely exceeded its pre-sale estimate of €40,000 – €50,000. The sale was a great success for Whyte’s, grossing in excess of €800,000 in total.

An interesting video clip of the sale highlights is available on  http://myantiques.tv/ in the meantime here is the star of the sale – Altan Lough by Paul Henry – enjoy, as Ian Whyte said, “you won’t be seeing it again for sometime”!

CHRISTMAS BONANZA FOR IRISH ART LOVERS

Three pre-Christmas Dublin sales for Irish Art Lovers

Whyte’s Irish Art Sale on Monday 28th November, de Vere’s Irish Art Auction on Tuesday 29th November and James Adams Important Irish Art Sale on Monday 5th December.

Whyte’s Irish Art Sale at the Royal Dublin Society (RDS) on Monday 28th November kicks off the Christmas Art Auction season in Dublin, and there’s plenty of big names to choose from in the 224 lots.  Lot.12. ‘A Young Man’s Trouble’ (1900), a watercolour by Jack B Yeats, carries an estimate of €20,000 – €30,000. An example of the artist’s early work, when it was still possible to discern the subject matter without the aid of an art expert.

Lot.20. ‘The Street in Shadow’ (1933) – below – another Yeats work carries an estimate of €50,000 – €70,000 . A more typical work from Yeats where he used the oil paint directly from the tubes resulting in an appalling, but valuable, daub.

Lot.72. “Paris Red Wall”   More art (?) from Sean Scully – a man who shouldn’t have given up the day job. A limited edition lithograph (40) this is number 34 and closely resembles what my children used to bring home from Junior Infants. Priced at an outrageous €3,000 -€4,000 which it will no doubt achieve!

Just a few highlights from Whyte’s sale which has much to offer and prices to suit all pockets.
 ————————————————————————————————————————————————–
de Vere’s Irish Art Auction at the D4 Berkeley Hotel in Ballsbridge is next up on Tuesday 29th November and has 123 Lots including a nice Percy French watercolour at an affordable €2,500 – €3,000, a small sketchbook drawing by Jack B Yeats €1,500 – €2,000 but with the star attraction being a Paul Henry work titled “Reflections Across the Bog” which carries an estimate of €70,000 – €100,000.

"Reflections Across the Bog" by Paul Henry. Est.€70,000 - €100,000

Finally comes the James Adams Important Irish Art sale on the 5th December and again all the big names feature with Lot.53. “Jazz Babies” (1929) by Jack B Yeats topping the bill with a whopping estimate of €500,000 – €800,000.
